In 1987 a friend of mine invited me to "come play some theatre games". I had no idea the world that I was entering into. It was a world of infinite possibilities - the world of improvisation. I think it's fair to say that was a life-defining moment.
Since that fateful day in '87, I've had the privilege to learn from the world's greatest teachers of improvisation. I've performed in over a thousand shows, alongside many incredibly talented people. I've taught and directed improvisation and acting around the world.
Improvisation is a fun way to perform, to create comedy and drama, to shine a light on all it is to be human. It is so much more than that though. It is a practice that teaches you how to really see people, and to see yourself.
We sometimes joke about it, saying "It's not a cult (it's kind of a cult)". Improvisers, by their very nature, are some of the kindest, funniest, most generous and loving people you will meet. If it is a cult, it's the best kind of cult.
Impulse Theatre is the Christchurch-based improvisation theatre which I founded in 2015. I'm very proud of the work we do, and the way we inspire each other. Our little group has been steadily growing, creating performances, teaching, and branching out into other forms of performance.
